Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy is a type of occupational therapy that involves the use of water to restoring, maintaining, and improving health and physical conditions, as it facilitates blood circulation and enhances balance and coordination.
Treatments include but not limited to steam baths, saunas and hot and cold compresses. Hydrotherapy can be performed in many different ways. And it can be carried out both professionally or domestically.
Temperature plays an important role in this therapy. And different ailments can be treated by therapies used at different temperatures, for instances:
-
Cold water stimulates the body by constricting blood vessels and restricting blood flow to slow down inflammation. It also sends blood towards the internal organs to make them function more efficiently.
-
-
Hot water relaxes the body by dilating blood vessels, increasing blood flow and sending it to the skin and muscles to ease stiffness.
Using hot and cold water together or alternately is common in hydrotherapy, which can improve circulation, boost hormonal and organ function.

Some practices require the client to float, which allows their bodies to be massaged by moving water, stimulating the touch receptors on their skin.
May it be taking a hot bath to unwind after a stressful day, using an ice pack on a swollen ankle, or going to a spa for medical treament, hydrotherapy is certainly beneficial to all!
